Dromaeosaurus albertensis

Description

The beast that gives the group of dinosaurs its name, Dromaeosaurus is surprisingly very poorly understood. From what is known of it, Dromaeosaurus relied more on its very tyrannosaur-like jaws than its relatively small killing claws to dispatch prey. It also was much rarer than the other small carnivores of the Dinosaur Park Formation, including its relative, Saurornitholestes. Based on this, it was quite possible that Dromaeosaurus might have been solitary or lived only in pairs, like the modern eagle owls. Here however, a pair of adult Dromaeosaurus have brought down a Parksosaurus and invite their two remaining fledglings to feed on the kill.

This sketch and the painting to follow are dedicated to my mother, Claire Vandenberg, who despite many hardships in life, has always supported me and my sister as best she can. Mom, thank you for all the funny stories, inspiring two books i'm working on, and for always trying to be understanding.
