Description

A very strange cephalopod that can be considered a link between belemnites and more advanced squid, the Quillitus (Paleoteuthis multispinus), is a very large squid that lives in the Pacific Ocean. Growing as large as the famous Giant Squid, the Quillitus possesses a hard chitinous spine on its tail as a defense against predators such as sperm whales. Males also possess a second sharp spine on their mantle for ritual sparring, during which they swim vertically and attempt to stab each other at close quarters. This unique feature is the result of the pen inside the squid’s body developing into a defensive structure. Adaptable and able to ascend from dark depths into shallower waters in order to take advantage of different food sources, the Quillitus is equipped with two sets of tentacles in addition to the eight arms typical of other cephalopods. The arms and retractable pair of tentacles are lined with chitin-toothed suckers and hooks while the longer set of tentacles are covered in sharp claws. Quillitus feed on large fish, other squid (including juvenile Giant Squid), and benthic prey such as crustaceans. Despite being a hunter of large prey, the Quillitus is unaggressive towards divers, and will often retreat to a safe distance or ignore them.

A creature I created in 5th grade for a biology project and to which i still have the original painting. Don't ask me where i came up with the name… i was 10 when i came up with it and i will not be persuaded to change it.
