Tuari- Father of the Manawa

Description

“That thing should not be.” –Thorinen, upon seeing Tuari, the father of the Manawa, for the first time.

Alchemic beasts and interspecies hybrids pop up every few years or decades in Kairegorn thanks to the vile work of necromancers or the beneficial work of sorcerers trying to aid in helping Kairegorn’s populace, but no beast is as terrifying to look upon as Tuari the Manawa. A hideous hybrid cross between a Jormungundr and a wyvern, Tuari is the steed of Hagedis, the leader of the Dark Corps in Deltthion’s absence.

In appearance, he has four wings that are attached to each other by the trailing edge of the primary wing membrane and two legs with five claws on each foot. His back is armored in crocodile-like armor and his skin is covered in small, fine scales and his long tail is armed with the characteristic stinger and spikes found on all wyverns. His head however is the most frightening part of his anatomy; his massive interlocking teeth (set into fearsome, bone-splintering jaws) all shine with a metallic radiance that makes it appear as if they are made with iron and he has no eyes. Instead, like the Jormungundr that was his mother, he relies on smell and echolocation to locate his environs and his enemies. In addition to this, he can issue an ear-shattering scream that can even cripple dragons and spit a freezing mist that can counter their fiery breath. But perhaps his most disturbing feature is his ability to mimic the appearance of a huge wyvern. In this form he measures about 100 feet, but upon shedding this disguise (a grotesque transformation akin to the shedding of a snake’s skin and the tearing of seams on fabric), he is more than three times this size; a full 340 feet long.

Despite being Hagedis’ steed, Tuari has neither love for his master nor any true loyalty and he does not show any hatred or contempt towards dragons. He obeys Hagedis only because he has known nothing else. Were he allowed, Tuari would flee for the farthest, darkest reaches of the continent and live alone and unbound. However, Hagedis forced Tuari to lay several clutches of eggs (he is hermaphroditic and needs no mate in order to breed) and therefore, Tuari stays to protect them should they hatch.

A monster whose name was given to me by my sister. It stuck perfectly, for Tuari means "eagle" and Manawa means "warrior" in the various native american languages
